It is with deep sorrow that I write to say that I received a call today while in town saying that King had been hit and killed by someone driving up our driveway. He was not a tire chaser, but I guess they were in a hurry and he didn't move out of the way in time. :'(

He was a beautiful, sweet, gentle, biddable boy who was a right hand man around here. I'm still reeling.

RIP sweet King ðŸ’”

King is a young shaded sable. We imported him from Green Mountain English Shepherds in North Carolina. He is a sweet, sensible, biddable boy. Insatiable is one of the key descriptors for his love of learning; he's highly food motivated. King learns commands quickly and doesn't mind repetition as long as there are rewards.

He can be vocal, mainly when frustrated, but is between Jazz and Misty for energy. When he was a pup, he had short periods of frenetic activity, but switched off easily. I'm not seeing those frenetic moments anymore. He tends to switch off under different situations than Misty. (That doesn't mean that she doesn't switch off, just differently- in fact, she can be calmer in certain circumstances). Both are very well behaved in crate and house. King mouthed a fair amount as a puppy, but no longer does. He has always been gentle.

None of our dogs are hyper.

King is a gentle dog. I was bedridden for the first three months I had him, so he didn't get the classic socialization that we all deem critically important. Nevertheless, when I babysat a little girl a while ago (our kids are all teens & adults) after taking a few minutes to figure out what this little creature *was*, he ended up deciding that she was fascinating and spent hours laying near her, watching her every move.
And, when we had a bonfire recently, replete with children running, screaming and sliding on the icey driveway, both he & Misty kept a close eye on them, accompanying & checking them over after every tumble.

He's great with our teens, too :)

On the other hand, King's not particularly trusting of adult strangers on his property, preferring to keep aloof, particularly if we're not around. He will circle at a distance, barking. However, when we're home, he stands down quickly.

Not as laid back as Jazz, King was less excitable in the barnyard than Misty as a puppy. They are both pretty well behaved in there now, although King takes exception to our LGD trying to paw him in play. He finds being flattened offensive, and tells her so. Good thing she's tolerant! King is eager to move stock, and is generally attuned to me as opposed to his wishes MOST of the time.  He is my 'go to' dog when I need to find lost goat kids, and is thrilled when he pleases me. He is a stick-to-me shadow dog who I lose regularly only to find him right behind me following me as I turn, lol :p

Not great videography... it's hard to do it well while herding, trying not to trip over sticks, and directing a young dog, lol :p But see a brief clip of King working stock  here

More about King on our Blog & FB

A water lover, King leapt off the bank into the dugout like a dock diver as a pup. He is a bit more sedate about it now. Wish I'd caught it on video!
