Welcoming Monty

Here's Monty, our son of Husted's Trib to Johnny 'Cash'. We're hoping he will be Jazz's beau.

We got him Apr 2 (first 4 pics are from that day). After greeting us upon pick up with a friendly wag, the picture of him sitting was his reaction to the cacophony from our other dogs in our yard when he first arrived. He sat down to calmly watch and ponder the situation.

I took him down to our barnyard yesterday for a first sighting of poultry (in his life) and goats (he's seen some of our others in another area prior, but hadn't been around them before we got him, just sheep.). His first thought upon seeing the chickens was "smorgasbord!", but he responded well to correction on that, although he's still highly interested and may never be fantastic with them off leash- we'll have to see on that one- but Jazz is great with them, so I don't really need him to be. Then we wandered out to see the goats and sat watching them for a while. He thought that was highly intriguing, again responding to verbal cues from me.

Then I went to feed some supplements to a couple of dairy does who are expecting soon and are a bit thin for my liking. Of course, the rest of the goats wanted to join in. I lifted one leg up and pushed back on the chest of the first doe who started to crowd me. Monty, who was on a long leash, quickly jumped in and swung on a pendulum behind me, going from side to side, nipping lightly at each goat who tried to push up into me. He kept all of them off me! I hadn't said a thing! I did verbally 'ahh' him when he first tried to do one of the does I wanted there, but after that, I didn't have to say anything at all other than 'good boy!' Love him already :)

More info on him can be found on our website here.
